The Oldest Prison in Ancient Rome
Dating back to the 7th century BC, the Mamertine Prison is considered the oldest surviving prison in Rome.
Originally built as a cistern, it was later converted into a prison used to detain enemies of the Roman state.
Unlike modern prisons, it was not meant for long-term sentences. Instead, prisoners were held here briefly before trial or execution, making it a place of fear and final judgment.

Underground Chambers
The Mamertine Prison consists of two main levels:
- Upper Chamber (Carcer): A stone-built room used for holding prisoners
- Lower Chamber (Tullianum): A dark, circular dungeon where prisoners were lowered through an opening above

Christian Significance
Over time, the Mamertine Prison gained religious importance. According to tradition, Saint Peter and Saint Paul were imprisoned here before their martyrdom.
