Vatican Hill, Rome

Located on the western bank of the Tiber River in Rome, Vatican Hill—also known as Mons Vaticanus—is one of the most historically significant hills in the world. Though not part of Rome’s famous Seven Hills, Vatican Hill became globally recognized as the spiritual heart of the Roman Catholic Church and the home of Vatican City.

Steeped in ancient Roman history, the area was once home to gardens, burial grounds, and the Circus of Nero. Over time, it became closely associated with Christianity, as it is traditionally believed to be the burial site of Saint Peter. Today, the hill is crowned by the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica, drawing millions of pilgrims and travelers each year.

Visitors to Vatican Hill can admire breathtaking architecture, sacred landmarks, and centuries of religious heritage while experiencing one of the most iconic destinations in Europe.
